More than 171 trillion pieces of plastic are now estimated to be floating in the world's oceans, according to scientists. plastic kills fish and sea animals and takes hundreds of years to break. Approximately 36 per cent of all plastics produced are used in packaging. this includes single use plastic food and beverage containers, 85 per cent of which end up in landfills or as mismanaged waste. farming is another area where plastic is ubiquitous: it is used in everything from seed coatings to mulch film. the fishing industry is another. The fda’s researchers run rigorous tests on these plastics and measure how much plastic mass is lost when exposed to hot water. for example, the fda has determined that food grade nylon (such as that used in tea bags ) can safely lose up to 1% of its mass under high temperature conditions.
